Frida Kahlo Museum

A historic house museum and art museum dedicated to the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo located in Coyoacán, Mexico City.

The Frida Kahlo Museum, affectionately known as La Casa Azul (The Blue House) for its cobalt-blue walls, stands as a vivid testament to the life and art of one of Mexico’s most iconic artists, Frida Kahlo.

Located in the heart of Coyoacán, one of Mexico City’s oldest and most charming neighborhoods, the museum captures the essence of Mexican culture, intertwined with the personal and artistic journey of Kahlo herself.

Historically, Casa Azul was not only Kahlo’s birthplace but also her residence for the majority of her life. She was born here on July 6, 1907, and it was in this house that she spent many years with her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera.

The house itself is a piece of Mexican history, built by Kahlo’s father, Guillermo Kahlo, in 1904. In 1958, four years after Kahlo’s death, Rivera donated the house to the Mexican government to turn it into a museum in her honor.

Walking through the blue gates of Casa Azul, visitors step into a world that Frida Kahlo once inhabited. The museum is meticulously preserved, with rooms decorated as they would have been during Kahlo’s lifetime.

Original furniture, personal belongings, and a collection of her clothing and medical corsets give a deeply personal insight into her life, reflecting her struggles with chronic pain and her vibrant, uncompromising spirit.

The museum also houses a collection of Kahlo’s artwork, offering visitors a glimpse into her complex inner world.
