Bacalar is a small town in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, situated on the edge of the Bacalar Lagoon.

Known historically as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” this body of water gets its name from the varying shades of blue and turquoise, created by different depths and a mix of limestone and cenotes.

Bacalar was established by the Maya as a commercial settlement more than 2,000 years ago. Throughout its history, it has witnessed significant events, including Spanish colonization and battles during the Caste War in the 19th century.

The town and its fortress, San Felipe, were pivotal in defending against pirate attacks.

What makes Bacalar special is its breathtaking natural beauty and serene atmosphere. The lagoon is a freshwater body, fed by underground cenotes, offering a habitat for diverse flora and fauna.

Its clear, multihued waters are ideal for swimming, kayaking, and sailing. The surrounding area is dotted with Mayan archaeological sites, adding a layer of cultural significance.

Moreover, Bacalar’s commitment to eco-tourism protects its unique ecosystem while allowing visitors to enjoy its natural wonders responsibly.
